Welcome to the blog! I'm Laura Richards | Charlottesville Family Photographer

Updated: Sep 15

Hi, there! If you've found your way here, I'm honored! Being a family photographer can sometimes feel like a being a small fish in a big sea. Thanks to social media, there's a lot of comparison going on, too — and you know what they say about that: Comparison is the thief of joy.

When I begin to compare myself to other family and newborn photographers, I try to shift my thoughts to all my amazing clients. I remind myself of each family that has invited me into their beautiful lives and trusted me to bottle up a particular season of life for them — maybe it's the addition of a new baby, or their last summer in Charlottesville, or that sweet toothless grin that'll be filled in before they know it.

At this, I'm instantly filled with gratitude, inspiration, and an eagerness to serve more families — to tell their stories through light-filled, emotive imagery and heirloom-worthy print art.

My love of photography started when I turned 7 years old and was gifted my first camera — a Crayola 110 Flash Camera to be exact. I documented all kinds of very important things with that now-relic, like trips to the beach, my parents and siblings, my cat and dog, and once, every room in my house in case we ever moved.

Throughout high school and college (go Dukes!), my love of photography evolved into a passion for photojournalism. This led me along a path of editorships, magazine features, and even a month-long trip to Italy, where I told the story of young Italians who romanticized all things America.

After college, when I was working a 9-to-5 in marketing, I began a project called Project Hands. For weeks after work, I spent time at my local Rescue Mission interviewing the men and women there and making “portraits” of their hands. Together, their stories highlighted the struggles, joys, and heartaches of the unhoused community.

These days, I've gone back to my roots — photographing families, many in the comfort of their home, with a lot of film. It's a recipe that feels so right and true. I love knowing that I can give families, especially children, family photos that ring with laughter, love, and the nostalgia that only film can offer.

If you're still here, thank you. I hope we can work together soon!
