A sunny & joyful at-home family session | Charlottesville Family Photographer

A friend recently asked me about my photography business, and when I told him that I had been doing more at-home family sessions, his response was, "Is that like portraits of the family in front of the fireplace and on the couch?" Ohhh wow, I thought. That couldn't be further from the truth.

But maybe that's absolutely what most people imagine an at-home session is like — stiff poses, flat light, a permanent record of your decor. My friend's reaction was a reminder that at-home sessions are not common. They are not the go-to. We've become so used to rushing off to a big field at sunset that we haven't given our homes — a space so integral to our best memories, our babies' childhoods, our everyday — a second, serious thought.

When I arrived at the Cloeter home for their session back in April, my fire for at-home family sessions had recently been lit. When I left, I knew that these sessions are my biggest creative fuel. I remember thinking, "I could've stayed there all day." They laughed, jammed to their favorite Dave Matthews songs, played Dad's guitar, ate homemade cinnamon rolls, and played in the backyard. Everyone felt seen, loved, and celebrated. Using rooms and spaces where the light was prettiest, I created both digital and film images reflecting the heart and soul behind their family of four. And the best part? No one needed shoes!
