When I arrived at their house in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Dad looked at me apologetically and said, "The house is a mess, and we didn't get much sleep last night."

"You have a newborn and two other kids," I replied. "I'd be concerned if the house was spotless and you had gotten a lot of sleep!"

Once again, the state of your house matters surprisingly very little during an at-home session. It's true! The look and function of a room are far less important than the light it receives and the creative eye of the photographer.

For this session — my third Fresh 48 newborn session with the H family — I knew that we would be mainly photographing by the big window in their family room. Again, the surrounding toys didn't matter. Neither did the still-up birthday decorations. To prepare for their session, all Mom and Dad needed to do was focus on their new family of five and trust me.

Other than spending a few minutes upstairs in their daughter's room, we hung out by that big window the whole time. I documented their beautiful family on both digital and film, in the peaceful, sunny comfort of their living room. Just pure magic.
